Pittsburgh Society of Artists – New Member Screening http://friendship-pgh.org/2013/10/pittsburgh-society-of-artists-new-member-screening/ http://friendship-pgh.org/2013/10/pittsburgh-society-of-artists-new-member-screening/#comments Tue, 01 Oct 2013 14:14:45 +0000 tdomf_ca85c http://friendship-pgh.org/?p=18434 The Pittsburgh Society of Artists (PSA) welcomes regional artists to a new member screening Sunday, October 20, 2013.

Location:
Pittsburgh Center for the Arts
Simmons Hall
6300 Fifth Avenue
Pittsburgh, PA 15232

Drop off time: 12:30 to 1:00 PM and pick up from 3:00 to 4:00

The most decisive factor in judging a candidate for membership is the artist’s ability to speak with a recognizable ‘voice’ through their work. Consistency in style and medium allows an artist to showcase their talents in the particular area in which they are most accomplished.
For full guidelines for screening see our website www.pittsburghsocietyofartists.org

Present three (3) gallery ready (framed and wired) pieces of art completed within the last two years and not under direct instruction. Both two or three-dimensional pieces are acceptable.

PSA today consists of more than 350 artist members who live within a 150-mile radius of Pittsburgh and are creators who use all varieties of visual arts media. PSA was officially chartered in 1967. PSA Mission Statement reads: Pittsburgh Society of Artists is dedicated to the vitality and growth of the visual arts in the Pittsburgh area. Formed for the specific purpose of exhibiting original works of art by its members, Pittsburgh Society of Artists has as its goals the encouragement and support of art in all its forms, the fostering of a true appreciation of art, and
the furtherance of social activity and good will among its members and the people of Pittsburgh. For more information about PSA and current shows visit the website at www.pittsburghsocietyofartists.org

Community Meeting (Children’s Home Construction) http://friendship-pgh.org/2013/10/community-meeting-childrens-home-construction/ http://friendship-pgh.org/2013/10/community-meeting-childrens-home-construction/#comments Tue, 01 Oct 2013 13:28:40 +0000 Maribeth http://friendship-pgh.org/?p=18450 COMMUNITY MEETING! When: Tuesday, October 15, 2013 Time: 12:00 p.m. Location: The Children’s Home, First Floor Conference Room 5324 Penn Avenue Pittsburgh, PA 15224 RSVP: By Tuesday, October 8, 2013 to Josh Amrhein at jamrhein@chomepgh.org or 412-441-4884

The Children’s Home of Pittsburgh (Penn Ave. and S. Aiken) is getting ready for a major expansion.

The new construction will occur within the existing footprint, with plans for vertical expansion up two floors. Part of this plan includes a new penthouse that will house its own separate HVAC unit. This could mean adding another 9.600gsf within 30-40 feet of the Children’s Home. Many of the surrounding neighbors have concerns about the additional HVAC output and the subsequent noise that it will create.

When the Children’s Home first opened their doors many of us were affected by the overbearing, loud pitch the buildings HVAC units produced. We quickly learned that the Children’s Home did not keep in accordance with the proposed sound wall that was part of the original master plan due to lack of funding. After years of working with the Children’s Home, community members and civic leaders a sound barrier system was finally installed. It didn’t fix the problem but did lower the noise level and pitch.

The Children’s Home is a wonderful addition to our community. They have a worthwhile mission and add a positive element to Friendship. That being said, as a community we need to ensure that the quality of our life and ability to enjoy our homes isn’t severely compromised due to additional noise pollution any new construction/renovation might produce. For those interested in this topic the Children’s Home is holding a community meeting to discuss their plans for construction and neighborhood concerns. Please consider attending.

Sanctuary http://friendship-pgh.org/2013/09/sanctuary/ http://friendship-pgh.org/2013/09/sanctuary/#comments Tue, 17 Sep 2013 15:04:11 +0000 tdomf_ca85c http://friendship-pgh.org/?p=18411 Pittsburgh Society of Artists Guild (PSA) presents “Sanctuary,” a juried multimedia exhibit at the Panza Gallery located at115 Sedgwick Street in Millvale. Juror Patricia Bellan-Gillen will select works that best interpret the theme of Sanctuary from entries submitted by members of the Pittsburgh Society of Artists. The exhibit opens with a reception on Saturday, September 21 from 5:00-8:00pm. The exhibit will run from September 21-October 19, 2013.

A sanctuary, in its original meaning, is a sacred place, such as a shrine. By extension the term has come to be used for any place of safety. This can be categorized into either human sanctuary, a safe place for humans such as a political sanctuary or non-human sanctuary, such as an animal or plant sanctuary.

Juror: Patricia Bellan-Gillen is the Dorothy L. Stubnitz Professor of Art at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, She has been an active participant in the Pittsburgh art scene for over 30 years as an artist, a mentor to young artists and as a member of several advisory boards. In 1995 Bellan-Gillen was selected as the Pittsburgh Artist of the Year. Her paintings, prints and drawings have been the focus of over 40 solo exhibitions across the U. S., and included in numerous group shows in museums, commercial galleries, university galleries, and alternative spaces.
